Debunking the 4 Most Common Myths about Pores

by Peach & Lily

Pores get a bad rap. But believe it or not, pores are a good thing! They allow sweat and sebum to be excreted out of our skin and also house our hair follicles. Due to these very functions, certain triggers like excess sebum production, inflammation and retention hyperkeratosis can cause our pores to become clogged and infected.

Our expert estheticians are here to break down the most common myths about pores, and how you can gain control of your pore issues — by keeping them "fit" for healthy, clear, tight pores.

Myth 1: You can shrink enlarged pores

Fact: Pores do not actually shrink in size. However, pores can be visibly firmed through ingredients that help make them appear visibly tighter and clearer.

Product Recommendation: Glass Skin Refining Serum

Peptides and adenosine help boost collagen production to visibly firm and tighten pores.

Myth 2: Genes determine pore size

Fact: Yes, this is true but it's not the full story. As we both age and are exposed to photodamage, pores can enlarge from smaller circle-shaped pores to larger tear-drop-shaped pores. Conversely, with consistent care in exfoliating, clarifying, balancing and tightening up pores, we can greatly minimize the appearance of pores. So, yes, genes play a role but how we care for our pores can meaningfully impact their appearance.

Product Recommendation: Super Reboot Resurfacing Mask

10% AHA + 0.5% BHA are proven to help intensively exfoliate to remove deeper impurities within pores. AHA is also proven to help visibly smooth and tighten.

Myth 3: Squeezing out sebaceous filaments shrinks pores

Fact: This can help pores look smaller in the short term, but in the long run can damage pores and enlarge them. So fight the urge to attempt your own at-home extractions!

Product Recommendation:Pore Proof Perfecting Clay Mask

Kaolin Clay + Bentonite "vacuum" out sebum and impurities without tugging at pores.

Myth 4: Stubborn pore issues cannot be managed

Fact: Daily maintenance helps tremendously with those who experience rapid and frequent clogging of pores. Exfoliate and clarify daily to maximize "pore-fitness."

Product Recommendation: The Good Acids Pore Toner

Use AHA + BHA daily to stay on top of pores and keep them exfoliated and gently polished without stripping skin.
