What Type of Skin Do I Have? 5 Types Explained.

by Peach & Lily

When people start taking the importance of skincare more seriously, they often ask themselves questions like, “what type of skin do I have?” Getting an answer to this question is very important. Above anything else, understanding your skin type is the most important factor to consider when you’re putting together a skincare routine. There are five types of skin – oily, dry, sensitive, combination, and normal – and each has different needs and will respond differently to certain products and ingredients.

If you’ve just started getting into skincare and want to know what type of skin you have, read on to find out!

5 Types of Skin Explained

Oily

Everyone’s skin naturally produces oil, or sebum, but some produce it much more than others. In addition to making skin appear greasy or shinier, this excess of oil can clog pores and lead to acne breakouts, blackheads, and enlarged pores. Skincare products for oily skin types help unclog pores, reduce shine, and get sebum production under control.

Dry

Think of dry skin as the total opposite of oily – skin doesn’t produce enough oil. Without enough oil, skin can look dull and feel tight, and that dryness will often lead to cracking, peeling, and flaking. People with dry skin need a good moisturizer and other products that will help lock in that hydration.

Sensitive

Sensitive skin is very, well, sensitive to common environmental stressors and certain ingredients in skincare products. This sensitivity can make skin look red and irritated, and it may feel itchy and uncomfortable. Skincare products for sensitive skin are much gentler and formulated without harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances.

Combination

This skin type is pretty self-explanatory. Combination skin is skin that has different characteristics in different areas. For example, if your forehead is naturally very oily, but your cheeks are super dry, then you have combination skin.

Normal

If you’ve wondered, “what type of skin do I have?” and haven’t related to any of the skin types listed above, then you have normal skin. While one could argue that all skin is normal, in skincare, normal skin means skin that’s well balanced and doesn’t display repeated concerns.
