Exfoliating is a crucial step in your skincare routine because it removes dead skin cells, dirt, debris, and whatever other gunk and grime have attached themselves to the surface of your skin. However, because exfoliating can be harsh on the skin, it can be tough to know
often you should do it. “How often should you exfoliate your body?” is probably a question everyone that takes skincare seriously has asked, and today we’re going to answer it!
Most skincare experts would recommend exfoliating two to three times a week, leaving a day or two in between for your skin to “rest” and refresh itself before you exfoliate again. However, the answer to “how often should you exfoliate your body?” will differ depending on what skin type you have. For those with sensitive skin, exfoliating three times a week is likely way too much. To avoid irritation, don’t exfoliate more than twice a week. But if you have oily skin, two or three times a week might not be enough. All that excess oil can clog your pores, leaving your skin looking dull and making you vulnerable to an acne breakout. If your skin is naturally oily, consider exfoliating your face every day and the rest of your body four or five times a week.
In addition to skin type, things like age, hydration, and weather can affect the answer to the “how often should you exfoliate your body?” question. Our skin’s natural exfoliating process slows down as we age, so consider exfoliating more often the older you get. If you drink a lot of water, you may not need to exfoliate as often because staying hydrated helps your skin naturally flush toxins that could clog up your pores. When it comes to weather, know that exfoliating more often during warmer months can help prevent excess oil build-up.
